Professor Deniz Gökengin is an academic staff member in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, Ege University. She was named associate professor in 1996 and professor in 2003. She has been holding the position of director of the Ege University HIV/AIDS Research and Practice Center since 2009. Professor Gökengin started her academic career with research on Chlamydia trachomatis and related infections and continued with sexually transmitted infections. She has been dealing with HIV patients since 1996 and is one of the leading clinicians in Turkey on HIV/AIDS management. Dr. Gökengin is the founder member of the AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections Society and the Positive Living Association and currently an executive member of the AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections Society; she also held the General Secretary of the same organization between 1999 and 2010. Dr. Gökengin is a board member of the International Union for Sexually Transmitted Infections (IUSTI) Europe representing Turkey. Her major areas of interest are sexual behavior, socials aspects of HIV/AIDS and medical management of HIV/AIDS. She ran many projects, participated in and organized meetings and training programs on sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS.
