Qualified from Hacettepe University School of Medicine in 1981 and has subsequently training in internal medicine and infectious diseases in the same institution Ankara, Turkey. He worked in the University of Texas Houston Health Science Center - Center for Infectious Disease as a research fellow during 1992-1993. He received the Roche (Turkey) scientific research award in 1996. Authored more than 50 peer reviewed publications. Research interests include antibiotic resistance, nosocomial infections, HIV and febrile neutropenia. He is a member of American Society for Microbiology, European AIDS Clinical Society, European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Febrile Neutropenia Society of Turkey, Antibiotic and Chemotherapy Society and Turkish Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (KLIMIK). He is a member of EORTC-IDG (Infectious Diseases Group) carrying clinical research in cancer patients. He is an active member of various international surveillance programs such as SENTRY, SMART. He is the current head of the HIV study group of KLIMIK and the coordinator of the HIV-TR cohort which has 33 participating centers from different regions of Turkey. He currently works as the Chairman, Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, Marmara University School of Medicine, Istanbul, Turkey.
